Student Development and Learning: theories and practices

We've moved permanently!

The Higher Education Training and Development Unit which was part of the University Teaching and Learning Portfolio has been reconfigured and effective January 1, 2018, its staff has been integrated in the School of Education in the Cluster of Education and Development Studies.

The aim of this module is to enable higher education practitioners to develop a sound understanding of theories of student development and learning with a particular focus on the applicability of these theories in the African context. The module will also require participants to apply these theories to their own practice as higher education practitioners.

Topics covered may include:

  • Theories of student development
  • Learning theories
  • South African research on students as applied to pre-entry, entry engagement and exit domains of higher education
  • Application of student development theory to practice
  • Campus learning and social environments
  • Student needs
