Supervising Research in Higher Education
Higher education institutions have increasingly large number of postgraduate students, all of whom require supervision of their research . Supervision of research is a form of teaching that many staff, irrespective of their own disciplinary expertise, have relatively little knowledge and limited skills. The development of academic staff in this area is essential to increase the quality and quantity of institutions’ postgraduate and research output.
It is anticipated that, by the end of the course, participants will
- be aware of the roles, functions and responsibilities of supervisor and supervisee
- have deliberated on ethical issues related to the research and supervision processes
- have devised a programme to meet the needs and capitalise on the strengths of diverse supervisees, and
- have drawn up a contract of supervision.
