African Higher Education in a Global Context

We've moved permanently!

The Higher Education Training and Development Unit which was part of the University Teaching and Learning Portfolio has been reconfigured and effective January 1, 2018, its staff has been integrated in the School of Education in the Cluster of Education and Development Studies.

This is a core module in the M.Ed Higher Education programmes

The aim of this module is to enhance participants’ awareness of the trends within and influences upon regional, national and international higher education. The module will require participants to explore systemic aspects of  higher education, its relationships with government and public policy, the effects of globalisation and internationalisation, issues of mobility, trends in student movements and in particular the influences on and of African Universities. Africanisation, African scholarship, transformation and regeneration are key issues that will inform the module.

It will cover issues such as:

  • Higher education in relation to globalisation and internationalisation
  • Africanisation, transformation and social justice in higher education
  • Trends and issues in African higher education
  • The South African higher education landscape
  • Structure, policy and finance relating to higher education
  • Higher education in engagement with its stakeholders/communities.

Assessment:

The assessment will be through short written tasks, practice based activities, and a long paper or project. There are no formal examinations.
